Referencing

The enquirer should refer to the style guide used by their institution or publication, as these vary. Our general advice would be to include the following information:

Referencing an archive:

Title or description of item as stated in the catalogue [and date?] The unique reference number of the item The name of the Collection as stated in the catalogue Acknowledgement of the Wellcome Collection should also be included.

e.g.

Printed ‘Proposals for a state-aided midwifery service In England and Wales’, by the Association for Promoting the Training and Supply of Midwives’,1918, SA/QNI/H.11/1, Queen’s Nursing Institute, Wellcome Collection.

Referencing a Visual item:

Name of creator Date Title as stated in the catalogue Medium Wellcome Collection Library No. – this is a unique identification number, the i number listed in the ‘Cite as’ field (524 field in Sierra) e.g. Jo Spence. 1982. Property of Jo Spence? [Photograph]. Wellcome Collection: Library no. 3049393i
