Making copies of CSAM by our digitisation team is not permitted as part of our standard digitisation workflow. Digitisation will only take place when there is a legitimate reason to do so, i.e., for conservation purposes to prevent loss or damage and allow legitimate research.

Any copies will be subject to the same procedures as the original. Access will be controlled within the digitisation workflow to minimise the number of staff coming into contact with CSAM. See for information on safeguarding staff.

For publications containing CSAM, only the text will be digitised and made available, if appropriate.

Takedown requests

Where an item has been digitised in the past, and is subsequently identified as containing CSAM, all indecent images will be taken down immediately and permanently deleted from all servers and storage repositories.

In order to ensure that all relevant documentation is updated, requests for images to be taken down should be sent to the Safeguarding Lead and Collections Information Analyst for who will then contact digital@wellcomecollection.org as well as the Digitisation and Preservation Systems Manager.
