Genre/Form

Definition

As well as Subject, access to the Work can be provided by means of genre(s) and/or form(s) (or identifiers) of which the Work is an example (i.e., what the Work is). Form describes the format and/or purpose of a Work, e.g., “non-fiction”, “short” and “animation” are particular forms or identifiers. Genre describes categories of Works, characterized by similar plots, themes, settings, situations, and characters (e.g. "western", "thriller") (FIAF 1.4.3).

Where to find the information

As with Subject, this information will best be found by watching or listening to a reasonable sample of the recording, though it will also be discernible from looking at the item, its packaging and any available metadata (e.g. from a box list).

For our purposes, it can be assumed that the item is non-fiction until found to be otherwise. It may be appropriate to assign more than one genre term.
