Indicators

The second indicator indicates which scheme the term is from. It should be 0 for Library of Congress (LOC) headings, 2 for Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) or 7 for other schemes (including Homosaurus or local terms).

The first indicator is usually blank except for when using MeSH headings, where it is used to specify the level of heading. Indicator 1 is used for primary terms and 2 for secondary terms.

Format

Subdivisions are often used in LOC and MeSH headings to make terms more specific, such as form (|v), time period (|y), geography (|z).

When using Homosaurus or local terms, you need to add a subfield |2 at the end of the field giving the source of the term.
