1XX

Name or title used as the primary access point for a record - the creator of the item being described. Known as the Main Entry.

1XX fields are not repeatable, there can only be a single 1XX field per bibliographic record. It is possible for a record to have no 1XX field, in which case the 245 becomes the main entry.

Identifying the main entry name

Use the name of the main (or first named) author, artist or creator.

If there are multiple authors/artists/creators, add additional names in the 7XX fields.

Associated names who are not the creator, e.g. editor, translator, illustrator, are added in the 7XX fields.

If the author/artist/creator is unknown, uncertain or contested, make the 245 the main entry and add possible creator names in the 7XX fields.

DCRM(G) identifies the main entry points for art works. Those most relevant to Wellcome's collections are:

Works after another artist

For works based on the work of another artist, i.e. after that artist, add the executive artist (i.e. the creator of this item) in a 100 and the original artist (i.e. the artist they are basing their work on) in a 700.

If only the original artist is named, add that name in a 700 and make the 245 the main entry. See DCRM(G) F1.3 & RDA 19.2.1.3

Terminology

See the creator element of the Visual & Material Culture Cataloguing metadata framework for a list of terminology relating to creators commonly found on prints. These will help identify their role and which MARC field they should occupy.

Identifying the correct form of name

Use a Library of Congress Name Authority entry, where possible.

If there is no LC entry, check the Wellcome catalogue for existing entries for the same person.

If there are no existing entries, enter the name following LC conventions (see construction and subfields below). Add life dates if known (reliable sources include Getty ULAN and VIAF).

If more than one form of name is in use, then use the most commonly used form.

Include relator terms in |e (100, 110) or |j (111) to explain the relationship of the person, organisation or meeting to the item being described. |e and |j can be repeated if more than one term is relevant. Relator terms are taken from the MARC Code List for Relators. We also use some local relator terms, particularly |ezinester.

Indicators The majority of names will be entered under the Surname first, first indicator = 1

For people entered under a single name, use first indicator 0.
