Credits (including Production Companies)

Agents involved in the creation, realisation, curation or exploitation of a Work/Variant, and considered to have major responsibility for, or importance to, the Work/Variant (FIAF 1.4.1). This may include persons, corporate bodies, families or groups. This includes cast and credits for the Work/Variant (though Cast is dealt with separately).

Since there may be many individuals or groups involved in the creation or realisation of a work, we should aim to capture at least the principle agents involved in its creation. This is important in determining copyright: Director, Producer and Writer are the most important ones, but there are others that we might also choose to record such as Cinematographer, Composer or Animator. We don't need to record everything (e.g. assistant sound recordist, editor), unless there are only a very few credits.

Where to find the information?

As with Cast, the information would usually be taken from the credits that appear on the work itself (on the screen or on the package/container, with preference given to what appears on screen). The information should be recorded exactly as it appears, without leaving room for ambiguity or interpretation.

Audio recordings may give the information as spoken credits (e.g. as with a radio broadcast), but where these are absent the information should be taken from the packaging, if available. This may include additional data elements such as music, narrator (see Cast) and production company.

If the information is not included on or with the item, it may be taken from another source such as the BFI catalogue; the source of the information should be noted in our catalogue record.
