When to use

  • There is a legal and/or reputational risk from disclosure;

  • Material contains child sexual abuse material (CSAM); AND

  • The child is no longer living and release wouldn't cause distress to direct surviving descendants.

If the individual is likely to be alive, the item will be closed under Data Protection legislation. See figure 2 for details.

An item with a safeguarded access status does not have an end date (as we have for restricted access or closed material) as sensitivity does not diminish with time.

Access Conditions Statement / 506 field: This item requires safeguarded access. You will need to complete an application form before you will be allowed to view this item. Requests are considered on a case by case basis. Please contact for more details.
