Copy-specific information

Early printed books are each individual and a catalogue record should help users identify any copy-specific information about each volume we hold.

Some copy-specific information is recorded in specific MARC fields:

  • immediate provenance information should be recorded in 541 (e.g. donor, source of purchase)

  • binding descriptions should be recorded in 563

  • evidence of previous ownership should be recorded in 561 (e.g. stamps, bookplates, labels, marginalia, inscriptions)

  • previous numbers for the item should be recorded in a 903 or 904
