Sources of information

Ideally, information should be taken from the title page of a book.

Multiple title pages

If there are multiple title pages, for example a half-title page or an engraved title page, prefer the title page to a half-title and a letterpress title page to an engraved title page.

Example of an engraved title page (EPB/B/12393)
Example of a half-title page (EPB/B/13190)

No title page

If there is no title page, information should be taken from the following sources (in order of preference):

  • cover of the item

  • caption title

  • masthead

  • colophon

  • other sources within the item (e.g. introduction)

  • bibliography, catalogue or other reference source

  • seller's description or catalogue

  • any other source.

If using a source of information outside of the item (i.e. the last three sources on the list above), put the information in square brackets.

If using any source of information other than the title page, add a note on the source of information in a 500 field.
