How to store different formats

Audio cassettes (magnetic media)

  • Can be stored within a larger box

  • Stand on long edge, not flat

  • Label on the spine

  • Do not store in 4.44 (the cold store)

  • Store on a shelf

  • Stand upright like a book

  • Label on the spine

  • Do not store in 4.44 (the cold store)

Video resource pack

  • These contain a VHS alongside supplementary paper documentation

  • Separate the VHS, rehouse, label and store upright on a shelf

  • Store the supplementary documentation in the original pack. It does not need to be stored alongside the audio-visual material

  • VHS do not need to be stored in 4.44 (the cold store)

Audio or video reels

  • This depends on the packaging:

    • If in purpose-built boxes with the reels secured in the middle, these can be stored upright

    • If in acid-free boxes, these are looser so should be stored flat. These can be stored within a larger box

    • Heavy video reels (e.g. 2" reels) should be stored flat

  • Label on the edge where possible

  • If the reel is magnetic media, this does not need to be stored in 4.44 (the cold store)

  • Store flat in a can

    • Liaise with Conservation / Angela Saward for re-canning guidance

  • Label on the edge on the can where possible

  • Store in 4.44 (the cold store)

    • Liaise with Sarah Bird for location
