Cataloguing practice at Wellcome has varied over the years and exceptions to almost everything set out below can be found in the existing catalogues. This is particularly true of the material converted from printed catalogues. All new cataloguing, however, should follow the principles and procedures set out in this manual.

What is covered in this manual?

The focus of this cataloguing manual is archive material, both analogue and born-digital. Although the cataloguing field names within this manual are the labels used in the archive cataloguing system (CALM), this does not replace use of the for system specific .

There is a separate which should be referred to when cataloguing these formats, and a designed to be used in conjunction with the format specific guidance within this manual.

Our western language manuscripts have historically been catalogued archivally and generally follow the principles set out within this manual. Non-western languages have been catalogued in a variety of ways, some within the library cataloguing system, some in hard-copy format only. Going forwards our manuscript collections will be treated more holistically regardless of language. Cataloguing will be based on the .
