When cataloguing a group of objects, chose the most appropriate option for the group:
If the group can be described, housed, ordered and retrieved as a group, a Bibliographic record describing the group should be created, meeting the Basic catalogue record requirements.
If the group can be described as a group, but needs to be housed, ordered and retrieved individually, a bibliographic record describing the group should be created, meeting the Basic catalogue record requirements. Create an item record for each part. e.g Volumes.
If each part of of a group needs to be described, housed and ordered individually, a Bibliographic record describing the group (parent), with additional Bibliographic records records describing the parts (children) can be created. The parent record must meet Basic record standards, but the child records can be to MVR standard.
In the Group (parent) record the 300|a must describe the extent of the whole group, and a 774 field must be included each related part (child) that is described in a separate Bib record.
In the Part (child) record mark the ENC LEVL in the Marc Leader as 5 (partially complete), and a 773 must be present to explain the relationship to the group. MVR child records must have Item records attached, with location and access information.
