# Exporting records {% hint style="warning" %} Before exporting a record, make sure you have validated it and set the holdings. See [Finishing a record](https://docs.wellcomecollection.org/library-cataloguing/9yMHsFGBXS9DDRGtdmSE/systems-guidance/editing-records#finishing-a-record) for more information {% endhint %} To export a record, you need to add the 949 field string. To do this, add a new field by clicking the green plus button at the end of any field, then right-click and go to **Field > Insert Field String...**:

You will then be presented with a dropdown menu where you can search for your field string. Start typing the beginning of the string (e.g. 949) and select the appropriate option. This will insert the field into the record.

You can also add the string as a text string. To do this, you need to first type the correct field number (in this case, 949). Then, right-click and go to **Field > Insert Text String...**:

As when inserting a field string, you will be presented with a dropdown menu to search for your text strings. Type the beginning of the string (e.g. \*) and select the appropriate option.

If you are overlaying a record, add the order record number to the end of the string. To export, go to **Record > Send to** and select **Local System (via TCP/IP)**:

There is no need to save the record at this point as the field string shouldn't be saved into the record. Once it has been exported, you can close the record by pressing **X** in the left-hand sidebar:

{% hint style="info" %} An orange circle will display in the left-hand sidebar if a record has edits that haven't been saved {% endhint %} If the record export has been successful, a message will display at the top of the screen:

There will also be a message if there have been any errors exporting.
