# Copy-specific information

Early printed books are each individual and a catalogue record should help users identify any copy-specific information about each volume we hold.

Some copy-specific information is recorded in specific MARC fields:

* immediate provenance information should be recorded in [**541**](https://docs.wellcomecollection.org/library-cataloguing/9yMHsFGBXS9DDRGtdmSE/bibliographic-record/5xx#id-541-source-of-acquisition-note-r) (e.g. donor, source of purchase)
* binding descriptions should be recorded in [**563**](https://docs.wellcomecollection.org/library-cataloguing/9yMHsFGBXS9DDRGtdmSE/bibliographic-record/5xx#id-563-binding-information-r)
* evidence of previous ownership should be recorded in [**561**](https://docs.wellcomecollection.org/library-cataloguing/9yMHsFGBXS9DDRGtdmSE/bibliographic-record/5xx#id-561-provenance-ownership-and-custodial-history-r) (e.g. stamps, bookplates, labels, marginalia, inscriptions)
* previous numbers for the item should be recorded in a [**903**](https://docs.wellcomecollection.org/library-cataloguing/9yMHsFGBXS9DDRGtdmSE/bibliographic-record/9xx#id-903-other-number-public-r) or [**904**](https://docs.wellcomecollection.org/library-cataloguing/9yMHsFGBXS9DDRGtdmSE/bibliographic-record/9xx#id-904-other-number-private-r)
