# 1XX

1XX fields are **not repeatable**, there can only be a single 1XX field per bibliographic record.\
It is possible for a record to have no 1XX field, in which case the [**245** ](https://docs.wellcomecollection.org/library-cataloguing/9yMHsFGBXS9DDRGtdmSE/2xx#id-245-title-statement-nr)becomes the main entry.

## Identifying the main entry name

Use the name of the **main (or first named)** author, artist or creator.&#x20;

If there are **multiple** authors/artists/creators, add additional names in the [**7XX**](https://docs.wellcomecollection.org/library-cataloguing/9yMHsFGBXS9DDRGtdmSE/bibliographic-record/7xx) fields.&#x20;

Associated names who are **not the creator**, e.g. editor, translator, illustrator, are added in the [**7XX**](https://docs.wellcomecollection.org/library-cataloguing/9yMHsFGBXS9DDRGtdmSE/bibliographic-record/7xx) fields.&#x20;

{% tabs %}
{% tab title="Visual & Material Culture" %}
If the author/artist/creator is **unknown, uncertain or contested**, make the [**245**](https://docs.wellcomecollection.org/library-cataloguing/9yMHsFGBXS9DDRGtdmSE/2xx#id-245-title-statement-nr) the main entry and add possible creator names in the [**7XX**](https://docs.wellcomecollection.org/library-cataloguing/9yMHsFGBXS9DDRGtdmSE/bibliographic-record/7xx) fields.

[DCRM(G)](https://rbms.info/dcrm/dcrmg/) identifies the main entry points for art works. Those most relevant to Wellcome's collections are:

<table data-header-hidden><thead><tr><th width="345.66666666666663"></th><th></th><th></th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Artwork / Material type</strong></td><td><strong>100 / 110 / 245</strong></td><td><strong>700 / 710</strong></td></tr><tr><td>Drawing or painting by a known / identified artist</td><td>Artist</td><td>None</td></tr><tr><td>Photo with corporate links (producer/publisher), no individual name.</td><td>Corporate body</td><td>None</td></tr><tr><td>Photo with corporate links (producer/publisher), individual photographer is named.</td><td>Photographer</td><td>Corporate body</td></tr><tr><td>Poster: artist and sponsoring organisation / advertiser named</td><td>Artist</td><td>Corporate body / sponsor / advertiser</td></tr><tr><td>Poster: sponsoring organisation / advertiser named, artist not named</td><td>Title</td><td>Corporate body / sponsor / advertiser(s)</td></tr><tr><td>Etching after a painting (adaption from another medium)</td><td>Etcher</td><td>Painter</td></tr><tr><td>Wood engraving after a drawing; artist and engraver named</td><td>Engraver</td><td>Artist</td></tr><tr><td>Wood engraving after a drawing; only artist named</td><td>Title</td><td>Artist</td></tr><tr><td>Lithograph with named lithographer, artist, and printer</td><td>Lithographer</td><td>Artist, Printer</td></tr><tr><td>Documentary photo of building by named architect</td><td>Photographer</td><td>Architect</td></tr></tbody></table>

Further examples can be found at DCRM(G) F1.3

**Works after another artist**

For works based on the work of another artist, i.e. **after** that artist, add the **executive artist** (i.e. the creator of this item) in a [**100**](#id-100-personal-name-author-creator-nr) and the **original artist** (i.e. the artist they are basing their work on) in a [**700**](https://docs.wellcomecollection.org/library-cataloguing/9yMHsFGBXS9DDRGtdmSE/7xx#id-700-added-entry-personal-name-r).

If only the original artist is named, add that name in a [**700**](https://docs.wellcomecollection.org/library-cataloguing/9yMHsFGBXS9DDRGtdmSE/7xx#id-700-added-entry-personal-name-r) and make the [**245**](https://docs.wellcomecollection.org/library-cataloguing/9yMHsFGBXS9DDRGtdmSE/2xx#id-245-title-statement-nr) the main entry. See DCRM(G) F1.3 & [RDA 19.2.1.3](https://original.rdatoolkit.org/rdachp19_rda19-448.html)

**Terminology**

See the [creator](https://docs.wellcomecollection.org/visual-and-material-culture-cataloguing/metadata-framework/metadata-elements/creator#iv.-common-terminology-found-on-prints) element of the Visual & Material Culture Cataloguing metadata framework for a list of terminology relating to creators commonly found on prints. These will help identify their role and which MARC field they should occupy.

## Identifying the correct form of name

Use a [Library of Congress Name Authority](https://id.loc.gov/authorities/names.html) entry, where possible.&#x20;

If there is no LC entry, check the Wellcome catalogue for existing entries for the same person.&#x20;

If there are no existing entries, enter the name following LC conventions (see construction and subfields below). Add life dates if known (reliable sources include [Getty ULAN](https://www.getty.edu/research/tools/vocabularies/ulan/) and [VIAF](https://viaf.org/)).&#x20;

If more than one form of name is in use, then use the most commonly used form.

Include relator terms in **`|e`** ([**100**](#id-100-personal-name-author-creator-nr), [**110**](#id-110-corporate-name-author-creator-nr)) or **`|j`** ([**111**](#id-111-meeting-name-author-creator-nr)) to explain the relationship of the person, organisation or meeting to the item being described. **`|e`** and **`|j`** can be repeated if more than one term is relevant. Relator terms are taken from the [MARC Code List for Relators](https://www.loc.gov/marc/relators/relaterm.html). We also use some local relator terms, particularly **`|e`**&#x7A;inester.

## [100](https://www.oclc.org/bibformats/en/1xx/100.html) Personal Name (author/creator) (NR)

**Indicators**\
The majority of names will be entered under the Surname first, first indicator = **`1`**

For people entered under a single name, use first indicator **`0`**.&#x20;

**Construction**\
For names that do not have an LC authority, **`|c`** and **`|d`** can be included if relevant or known.

{% hint style="info" %} <mark style="background-color:blue;">**1001**</mark> Mendel, Gideon<mark style="background-color:blue;">**,|e**</mark>author<mark style="background-color:blue;">**,|e**</mark>photographer.\ <mark style="background-color:blue;">**1001**</mark> Hogarth, William<mark style="background-color:blue;">**,|d**</mark>1697-1764<mark style="background-color:blue;">**,|e**</mark>artist.\ <mark style="background-color:blue;">**1001**</mark> Guthrie, James<mark style="background-color:blue;">**,|c**</mark>Sir<mark style="background-color:blue;">**,|d**</mark>1859-1930<mark style="background-color:blue;">**,|e**</mark>photographer.\ <mark style="background-color:blue;">**1001**</mark> Birch, Martin<mark style="background-color:blue;">**,|d**</mark>active approximately 1968-73<mark style="background-color:blue;">**,|e**</mark>artist.\ <mark style="background-color:blue;">**1001**</mark> Mirk, Sarah<mark style="background-color:blue;">**,|e**</mark>zinester.\ <mark style="background-color:blue;">**1000**</mark> Althea<mark style="background-color:blue;">**,|e**</mark>author.
