# Bibliographic record

The Bibliographic record describes the item being catalogued. The fields explained here are used at Wellcome (or have been) and include specific local uses.

* It is recognised that the cataloguer may not have information to populate every field.
* Where fields can be repeated the field title is followed by **(R)**. Non-repeatable fields are marked with **(NR)**.
* Field examples are formatted to allow the content to be copied and pasted straight into Sierra.

Full details for each MARC field and subfield can be found on the [OCLC Bibliographic Formats and Standards](https://www.oclc.org/bibformats/en.html) pages, which should be considered an additional cataloguing resource.

Follow [International Standard Bibliographic Description](https://www.ifla.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/05/assets/cataloguing/isbd/isbd_wwr_20100510_clean.pdf) (ISBD) punctuation rules.

You can also view a [MARC crosswalk](https://wellcomecloud.sharepoint.com/:x:/r/sites/wc2/cr/ci/Cataloging/General%20resources/Sierra%20instructions/MARC%20audit/MARCspreadsheet.xlsx?d=w0d0e6477862f4f08b5fd1d09bc45830a\&csf=1\&web=1\&e=KTx0qM) showing any local uses of MARC fields.
