Artists' Books were originally given a shelfmark comprising of a running number preceded by A e.g. A153. Those shelfmarks are now being used as unique identifiers and are recorded in the 001 field of the Bibliographic record.

There is running list of [A control numbers (Identifiers)](https://wellcomecloud.sharepoint.com/:x:/r/sites/wc2/cr/ci/Cataloging/General%20resources/Shelfmarks%20%26%20locations/searb.xlsx?d=wc7f5b13c1d6345f0b97457de565266c7\&csf=1\&web=1\&e=gBcVak). Use the first available number and ensure you delete it from the list to avoid duplication.

In the **Bibliographic record** use the **STAX** location and add the **655 Artists' books** genre if it isn't already there. Record the control number/identifier in **001**.

In the **Item record** use the location code **searb**, make the status **available** & OpacMsg = **f order online**

Place a flag in the Artist Book & write the A number on it. There is a [template for the flags](https://wellcomecloud.sharepoint.com/:w:/r/sites/wc2/cr/ci/Cataloging/General%20resources/Shelfmarks%20%26%20locations/Labels%20\(stickers\)/ARTISTS%20BOOKS%20SHELFMARK%20LABELS.docx?d=wf199fb81eca542b09fa16d7ee1ea856a\&csf=1\&web=1\&e=bjshjc), they should be printed on archival paper. Use the flag to house the barcode.

Where 2 copies of the same publication are acquired (often to allow a sealed book to be opened & to retain a pristine copy), then part number the 2 copies in the Item record. To do this:

* Use a single identifier in the 001 of the Bib record
* create an item record for each copy, making copy 1 the 'part 1' by adding .1 to the identifier/control number in the item shelfmark. e.g A534 would have A534 in the **001**, and then A534.1, A534.2 in the **shelfmark** for the corresponding item records.

Use the current location field to record the actual location. Currently we place them in the 3rd floor workroom & let Conservation know they need a permanent location. The location to use for the completed shelf in the workroom is **215;3.71;FR;3:1**
