# Terminology: All the parts of Wellcome Collection

Wellcome Collection is the venue that houses the library, exhibition spaces, etc. at 183 Euston Road, London. We say ‘Wellcome Collection’, not ‘the Wellcome Collection’ (except in a phrase like ‘the Wellcome Collection events programme’). Don’t shorten it to ‘Collection’, ‘the Collection’, or WC. We typically use first person in writing, so you’re more likely to use ‘we’ or ‘us’.

## Our collections

Here are some different ways you might use the word ‘collection’.

**A collection** – used as a catch-all phrase for a collection of stuff.

**An archive/archival collection** – usually unpublished materials from individuals, organisations, charities, and so on, which help draw a picture of the lifetime activities of that person or group. It often contains things like correspondence, notebooks, photo albums, diaries. The way they’re described and structured is hierarchical, like a folder filing system.

**Special collections** – refers broadly to all the unique materials we hold, primarily artworks, manuscripts, archives, film and video, and rare books printed before 1850. Often we may be the only library in the world to hold a copy, or our copy is ‘special’ because of its binding or provenance.

**Digital collections** – used throughout the Wellcome environment to denote physical things that have been digitised (rather than born digital), and may have an overarching theme or organising principle, such as Medieval Manuscripts, Medical Officer of Health Reports, Arabic Manuscripts, Mental Health Archives.
